VIBE

ALTERNATIVE BODY STIMULATION

VIBE is a system that stimulates your body through a personalised vibrotactile experience. The human body reacts intuitively to different rhythms: calm and positive states can be triggered with slower vibrotactile rhythms or states of excitement have been associated with faster tempos like the effect of music.

EMOTIONAL SENSING

Since everyone has their own sense of calmness or excitement, VIBE gets personalised. The emotional sensor in the form of a lollipop creates a baseline that curates then the vibration experience of the vest according to your personal biometrics.

INFO

WHAT:

Together with Toyoshima, the fashion company responsible for the 30% of Japanese clothing, we explored the future of wearable technology in 2030. Two concept ideas were developed, HYŌHI & VIBE in collaboration with Professors from the University of Tokyo.

WHERE:

DLX Tokyo Design Lab

WHEN:

Dec 2018 - Aug 2019

Technology - Professor Tsuyoshi Minami & Professor BJ Kim from the University of Tokyo

INSIGHT

Every generation after babyboomers has been less and less interested in alcohol with Generation Z being more interested in alternative ways for body stimulation.

Their preference towards experience based products as well as their interest in developing more their emotional intelligence, creates a new market for wearable devices.

OPPORTUNITY

VIBE is harnessing the natural way to stimulate the body, that of vibration. Vibration hasn't been widely used commercially to affect our mood, yet we have all calmed down in our mother's hug next to her heart beat and we have all felt uplifted next to the base speaker.

VIBE suggests the use of an emotional sensor in the form of a lollipop to be used to "capture the biometrics" in states of calmness and excitement. This not only creates the baseline for the curation of the experience but also enhances the emotional awareness of the user.

VIBE opens up a whole new market of experiences based on vibration and emotional sensing.

THE PROCESS

DESIGNING WITH THE CLIENTS

Co- creation sessions and workshops with the clients were held to define the starting points of the research, evaluate the concepts and decide the ones to develop.

PRIMARY & SECONDARY RESEARCH

Desk, market and field research was conducted to define trends, promising technology of the future and get user insights

MEET THE EXPERTS

I met with various experts of the fashion industry, wearable tech and scientists to understand better the challenges and next steps in the industry.

DESIGN CONCEPTS AS CONVERSATION STARTERS

The design concept was used as design probe at the final exhibition to get quantitative data from users.
